Winter Mosaic Workshops

Welcome to our Winter Mosaic Workshops!

This year, I couldn’t settle on a single workshop theme—so you get to choose between making an icon or a beautiful bug.

The Icons workshop is making a return due to its popularity last winter (click here to see last year’s Icons) and the many lovely requests I’ve received to run it again. Beautiful Bugs is a new theme, inspired by my fascination with the vibrant colours, intricate forms, and hidden beauty of insects. Some of the glass available in the studio has a gorgeous iridescent sheen, which will work beautifully in your bug-inspired mosaics. Your homework is to choose an icon or bug that you think would look fabulous in mosaic!

Workshop Details:

The workshops run over 5 weeks from Tuesday 10 June to Friday 11 July, 2025. You will need to attend at least four sessions in this timeframe to complete your mosaic. Our classes are flexible - you may choose to attend a specific class weekly (eg. every Thursday) or fast-track the course by attending multiple sessions in a two-week period.

Session Times:

Tuesday’s, Thursday’s and Friday’s 10.00am - 3.00pm

Please note that all sessions must be completed within the course period as this is a one-off class.

Course fees & Payment:

Icons & Symbols: $400 (includes materials)

Beautiful Bugs: $300 (includes materials) (This workshop is priced lower due to a smaller mosaic size and less materials used)

Please pay in cash on your first session.

Bookings: Phone Jane on 0434 640089 or email janefurney49@gmail.com to reserve your spot. At the time of booking, please also let me know which project you would like to create!

Both workshops are suitable for beginners and those with some experience with mosaics. We will primarily be using wheeled nippers to cut the glass, and you will also be shown traditional hammer and hardie cutting techniques. There is the chance to fuse glass in the kiln and learn about pulling glass rods, if you think these will enhance your mosaic.

Your finished piece will be approximately 20cm x 20cm in size.

The workshop fee includes $100 to cover materials such as the substrate, adhesives and smalti (glass).**

** Please note that gold smalti is not included but is available to purchase in small quantities, if desired.

Our class sizes are small to ensure everyone receives individual attention.

Students are requested to book in to each session to ensure a maximum of 6 students per session.

What to bring:

  • safety glasses (if you do not wear eye glasses)

  • closed-in shoes as we’ll be working with glass

  • an apron to protect your clothes

  • any special or personal objects that you think will enhance your mosaic

Mosaic Studio:

Our classes are held in Bella, a fully equipped mosaic studio, in the beautiful grounds of Villa Rustica. The studio is a friendly creative environment where students are encouraged to explore their creativity.

Bring your own lunch; tea and coffee facilities are available.

Your teacher:

The course will be led by Jane who is passionate about icons - especially the Coptic cross. Jane has been making mosaics for over 20 years, and brings this expertise to the classroom. Jane is also a member of the Mosaic Association of Australia and New Zealand.

Welcome to Bella, the mosaic studio!
