Botanical Mosaics Revealed!

Our botanical workshop was one of the most enjoyable and colourful events I’ve had the pleasure to host. Beyond the vibrant shapes and colours, it was inspiring to see how each participant formed a personal connection with their favourite flower or leaf. Flowers, I noticed, often carry memories of special occasions or people, or they can be symbolic as in the case of Dorothy’s leaf of a bodhi tree.

When planning the workshop, I imagined something simple — beginner-friendly and done in three sessions. In reality, that turned out to be a bit too ambitious as making mosaics is a slow process even without a summer hurricane disrupting things! Before the class got started, I asked everyone to send in a photo of their chosen flower or leaf. This way, I could scale the image to fit the frame and prep a colour palette and rough layout before we began.

Of course, the group’s creativity went far beyond the templates. With each week, the mosaics developed their own character and style - and sometimes included additions like glass rods, melted pieces of glass and copper sheeting. The result? A stunning collection of truly one-of-a-kind mosaics that are much more than what you’d expect from first-time mosaic creators.

Here are a few photos from the workshop — you’ll be able to see both the process and the finished mosaics. Sadly, I didn’t manage to get any photos of the artists in action during the workshop. Congratulations to everyone — I can’t wait to see what you create next!

And, if you’re keen to learn mosaics, my next class begins on 10 June with the themes of Beautiful Bugs and Icons and Symbols.
