Mosaics from our Winter 2025 Workshop

Claudia’s bee

This post celebrates the mosaics created in our winter workshop, where we explored two themes: Beautiful Bugs and Icons. At first glance, these themes may seem an unusual pairing. However, as the workshop progressed, I noticed that the students’ favourite bugs often held personal meaning in the same way as icons.

The photos below show the process and results of this incredible workshop. You’ll notice we used a mix of techniques and materials. From Caleena’s 3-d shimmering butterfly (made using fusing techniques) to the gorgeous stained glass backgrounds in Becky and Pauline’s works, each mosaic has its own personality. We even pulled glass rods to create delicate antennae and legs, bringing the bugs to life.

My goal in these workshops is to support each person to create an artwork that feels true to their interests — using their favourite colours, their tastes and their creative voice. Seeing how unique the finished pieces are is one of my favourite parts of teaching. Huge congratulations to everyone involved.

And just a little side note: this group was truly special. Everyone showed so much kindness and support as I navigated some challenges with my mum’s health. I’m incredibly grateful — thank you all.
