Roman Mosaic Workshop

Wednesday 4, 11, 18 & 25 March 10.00am to 2.00pm

On a recent visit to Pompeii, one humble mosaic stood out beyond the rest. Positioned at the entrance of a house, it was composed of jumbled pieces of marble and stone—simple, textural, and quietly powerful. This striking example of opus scutulatum proves that Roman mosaics were not only intricate pictorial scenes, but could also be beautifully abstract.

Join Jane for a hands-on workshop inspired by this ancient technique. You’ll explore the history of Roman mosaics and create your own abstract mosaic using marble and stone, focusing on rhythm, texture, and natural variation.

No prior experience is needed—just curiosity and a willingness to play with stone.

Group size: Maximum 6 participants

Cost: $320 per person (includes morning tea refreshments)
