Mosaic Tapestry Workshop

This workshop takes inspiration from the patterns found in vintage rugs, woven textiles and embroideries. We will design and create an intricate mosaic “tapestry” using Italian and Mexican glass (smalti), millefiori, ball chain and glass rods. You can also bring along costume jewellery, glass beads and vintage treasures to incorporate into your design - the more bling the better!

During this fun workshop, you will be introduced to traditional mosaic tools and cutting techniques that will take your mosaic skills to the next level. There will be a focus on preparing and drawing your design before commencing the mosaic as we will be gluing directly onto our substrate.

About this class:

This workshop is suitable for beginners and those with some experience with mosaics. You will be exposed to the traditional hammer and hardie cutting technique, and guided in how to pull glass rods and melt glass to create different effects.

Your finished piece will be approximately 15cm x 20cm in size, and comprise a hand-made curved substrate similar to the red mosaic shown in the above photo.

The $100 material cost covers the substrate, adhesives and 500g of smalti (glass). Please note that gold smalti is not included but will be available to purchase in small bags, if desired.

If you complete your mosaic before the end of the course, Jane can assist with your next project. Students will need to purchase their own materials for subsequent projects.

What to bring:

  • safety glasses (if you do not wear eye glasses)

  • closed-in shoes as we’ll be working with glass

  • an apron to protect your clothes

  • any “bling” to personalise your mosaic - eg. mirror glass, small ornaments, beads and vintage jewellery.

Mosaic Studio:

Our classes are held in Bella, a fully equipped mosaic studio, in the beautiful grounds of Villa Rustica. The studio is a friendly creative environment where students are encouraged to explore their creativity.

Complimentary tea and coffee facilities are available, and the studio has a refrigerator if you wish to bring a snack.
